What are cumulants?

چکیده
Abstra t. Let P be the set of all probability measures on R possessing moments of every order. Consider P as a semigroup with respe t to onvolution. After topologizing P in a natural way, we determine all ontinuous homomorphisms of P into the unit ir le and, as a orollary, those into the real line. The latter are pre isely the nite linear ombinations of umulants, and from these all the former are obtained via multipli ation by i and exponentiation.

Conditionally monotone independence
We define the notion of conditionally monotone product as a part of conditionally free product, which naturally includes monotone and Boolean products. Then we define conditionally monotone cumulants which are useful to calculate the limit distributions in central limit theorem and Poisson’s law of small numbers. Moreover, we introduce deformed convolutions arising from the conditionally monoto...
متن کاملCumulants in Noncommutative Probability Theory I. Noncommutative Exchangeability Systems
Cumulants linearize convolution of measures. We use a formula of Good to define noncommutative cumulants in a very general setting. It turns out that the essential property needed is exchangeability of random variables. Roughly speaking the formula says that cumulants are moments of a certain “discrete Fourier transform” of a random variable. This provides a simple unified method to understand ...
متن کاملThe Monotone Cumulants
In the present paper we define the notion of generalized cumulants which gives a universal framework for commutative, free, Boolean, and especially, monotone probability theories. The uniqueness of generalized cumulants holds for each independence, and hence, generalized cumulants are equal to the usual cumulants in commutative, free and Boolean cases. The way we define (generalized) cumulants ...
متن کاملA new approach for geological pattern recognition using high-order spatial cumulants
Spatially distributed natural phenomena represent complex non-linear and non-Gaussian systems. Currently, their spatial distributions are typically studied using second-order spatial statistical models, which are limiting considering the spatial complexity of natural phenomena such as geological applications. High-order geostatistics is a new area of research based on higher-order spatial conne...
متن کاملA Systolic Array Architecture for Computing Time-varying Higher-order Cumulants
For non-stationary processes, the conventional power spectrum does not reflect the time variation of the process characteristics. Higher-order cumulants or bispectrum has been applied in the analysis of nonminimum phase linear, time-invariant (LTI) systems under stationarity assumptions and restricting the signal to have non-symmetric distribution. It is clearly of interest to examine what type...
متن کاملCumulants, free cumulants and half-shuffles.
Free cumulants were introduced as the proper analogue of classical cumulants in the theory of free probability. There is a mix of similarities and differences, when one considers the two families of cumulants. Whereas the combinatorics of classical cumulants is well expressed in terms of set partitions, that of free cumulants is described and often introduced in terms of non-crossing set partit...
